Freezers often go untouched when it comes to organizing but they are one of the most messy, disfunctional spaces in our kitchens. We let food stack up and fall down every time we open the door, and we rarely fix the problem.
I want to challenge you to take the time to organize your freezer. It will be SO worth it! It gets used often, and when it's unorganized, it's annoying and frustrating.
I spent some time emptying mine and purging old food, wiping the freezer clean, and adding some clear bins. It's easier to see what I have without digging through everything, and I can grab items faster without losing all the cold air.

FAQ: What containers are best for organizing a freezer?
Before we dive into the step-by-step, let's answer the most common question I get when people see my freezer: what containers do you use?
I used five of these freezer bins from The Container Store and they work perfectly in my freezer! They would also work well in an upright freezer on shelves.
How to organize Your Freezer
There are a few basic steps to follow when organizing a freezer or refrigerator. I've outlined them below so you can follow along.
But first, check out this before picture!

Step 1 – Empty the freezer
Take every last item out of your freezer and set it all on a countertop or table nearby.

Step 2: Clean the freezer
While your freezer is empty, quickly clean any spilled, frozen messes and wipe all of the sides, top, and bottom clean. You can empty the bin of ice and clean it, too.
Step 3: Purge unwanted, expired food
Expired food gets shoved to the back of every freezer. I also find bags of opened food that didn't get sealed well, and those are better off thrown out. Take this time to see what you have and toss anything you know you won't use!
Step 4: Categorize your food
Quickly go through everything and separate it into categories like meat, dairy, veggies, frozen potatoes or side dishes, etc.

step 5: Use Bins To Organize Food In the freezer
Put everything back in the freezer, keeping what you use most often toward the top or front. Big items with flat tops and bottoms work well on the bottom so that bags of food can sit on top if needed.
Bins and drawers also really help with the issue of piling up foods that don't stack well. I used five clear freezer bins from The Home Edit Collection at The Container Store and they have been perfect for keeping food categorized and upright.
They have a removable divider which is really handy for the same reason. My freezer has two large drawers but I think these bins would also be really helpful if you have a side-by-side freezer/fridge because it would help keep things from getting stuck in the back.
